City Notice Roundup: Major Closures and Safety Alerts for Sunday, February 8

Significant Road Closures and Transport Disruptions
Residents and visitors should prepare for major travel disruptions across the inner north and eastern suburbs this Sunday, 8 February 2026. Two major events and infrastructure projects will necessitate full road closures and significant detours.
- Victoria’s Pride Street Party: In celebration of the Midsumma Festival, full road closures will be in effect from 3:00 am Sunday until 3:00 am Monday. Smith Street will be closed between Victoria Parade and Charles Street, Gertrude Street will be closed between Brunswick and Oxford Streets, and Peel Street will be closed between Smith and Cambridge Streets. Significant parking restrictions and temporary tow-away zones are active in the surrounding residential blocks.
- Eastern Freeway Weekend Closure: As part of the ongoing Eastern Freeway Upgrades, all citybound lanes between Doncaster Road and Bulleen Road are closed until 5:00 am Monday, 9 February. Commuters are advised to expect delays of up to 60 minutes and should utilize detours via Burke Road or Doncaster Road. Additionally, several entry ramps including those at Elgar, Middleborough, Blackburn, and Springvale roads remain closed.
Public Safety: Victoria Police Designated Area Notice
Victoria Police has issued a public notice declaring a "Designated Area" under the Control of Weapons Act 1990 for Sunday afternoon. From 12:00 pm to 10:00 pm on 8 February, police and Protective Service Officers (PSOs) will have increased powers to search individuals and vehicles for weapons within the Sunshine Railway Station precinct and the Sunshine CBD.
The designated zone is bounded by Harvester Road, Hampshire Road, and Devonshire Road. Officers may also direct individuals to leave the area if they are suspected of intending to engage in violent disorder. This operation is part of an ongoing commitment to public safety in transit hubs.
Health Advisory: Increased Measles Risk
The Chief Health Officer has maintained an active health alert following a rise in travel-related measles cases across Victoria. Six confirmed cases have been recorded in early 2026, largely linked to international travel from South-East and South Asia. Melburnians who have recently visited international airport terminals are urged to monitor for symptoms, which include fever, cough, and a characteristic rash, for up to 18 days following potential exposure.
Public Housing Redevelopment Update
Homes Victoria has issued notices regarding the second phase of the public housing tower demolition program. Residents in high-rise towers across Albert Park, Flemington, Kensington, North Melbourne, St Kilda, and Prahran are being notified of upcoming relocation schedules as the state government proceeds with the next stage of the redevelopment project. Legal and support services remain available for affected households during the transition period.
