City Notices: CBD Infrastructure Completion and Easter Service Schedules

CBD Infrastructure: Swanston and Lonsdale Street Completion
The City of Melbourne advises that significant roadway construction at the intersection of Swanston Street and Lonsdale Street is scheduled for its final phase of night works on Thursday, 2 April 2026. To minimize disruption to the retail core, works will take place between 10:00 PM and 6:00 AM. Residents and commuters should be aware of the following impacts during this final window:
- A full closure of the eastern footpath on Swanston Street.
- A full southbound road closure on Swanston Street at the intersection.
- Partial eastbound road closures on Lonsdale Street to facilitate paving and roadway rectification.
Pedestrians are encouraged to use the western side of Swanston Street, and motorists are advised to seek alternative routes via Elizabeth Street or Russell Street.
Public Event Preparation: Market Street Impacts
Commencing Thursday, 2 April 2026, temporary infrastructure and facilities will be installed along Market Street in CBD South. This installation is in preparation for upcoming community events scheduled over the Easter long weekend. Works include the placement of portable toilets and event staging from 6:00 AM until midnight. While the road remains open, localized pedestrian management will be in place to ensure safe movement around the work zones. These facilities are expected to remain on-site until Monday, 6 April 2026.
University Square: Stage Two Redevelopment
Construction is currently active on Stage Two of the University Square upgrade in Carlton. Following the successful completion of the Metro Tunnel project and the return of land formerly used for station construction, the council is expanding the parkland. This $7.8 million transformation involves:
- The permanent closure and absorption of Barry Street into the expanded green space.
- The creation of 2,500 square metres of additional public open space.
- The planting of new canopy trees and the installation of biodiverse gardens.
During this phase, through-access via Barry Street is permanently restricted. Residents are invited to view the project progress at the Grattan Street site boundary.
Easter Holiday Service Adjustments
As Friday, 3 April 2026, marks the beginning of the Easter public holiday period, the City of Melbourne reminds residents that regular Thursday waste collection services will proceed as scheduled on 2 April. However, residents are advised of the following changes for the upcoming long weekend:
- Council administrative offices and libraries will close at 5:00 PM on Thursday, 2 April.
- Recreation centres may operate under reduced holiday hours starting Friday.
- New bus timetables are now in effect across the metropolitan network to improve connections with the recently opened Metro Tunnel stations at Parkville, State Library, Town Hall, Anzac, and Arden.
