Commute Overview for Wednesday, 8 April 2026

Good morning, Melbourne. As we settle back into the work week following the Easter break, commuters have a major incentive to leave the car at home. Throughout the entire month of April 2026, all public transport across the metropolitan and V/Line network is free of charge. This cost-of-living measure means myki gates remain open at all stations, and passengers do not need to touch on or off for any train, tram, or bus service today.

Roadworks and Freeway Alerts

While the morning peak is expected to flow relatively well on major arteries like the West Gate Tunnel, which is now fully operational, several significant disruptions begin today that will impact evening and late-night travel.

  • Eastern Freeway: A major disruption begins tonight. The Springvale Road citybound entry ramp will be closed starting from 10:00 PM tonight, Wednesday, 8 April. This closure is part of the ongoing North East Link upgrades and is expected to remain in place until late April. Drivers should use Middleborough Road or Blackburn Road as alternatives.
  • CBD Night Works: Motorists traveling through the northern CBD tonight should be aware of roadway construction at the intersection of Swanston Street and Lonsdale Street. Works are scheduled between 10:00 PM and 6:00 AM, which may result in lane closures and local detours.
  • Newport and the West: Preparation for the permanent closure of the Champion Road level crossing is underway. While the road remains open today, expect increased construction traffic and minor delays near the Newport rail corridor.

Public Transport Updates

Despite the benefit of free travel, several lines are undergoing critical maintenance tonight that will require a shift to replacement buses.

  • Sunbury Line: From 8:30 PM tonight, buses will replace trains between North Melbourne and Sunshine stations. Commuters are advised to allow up to 45 minutes of extra travel time for these evening services.
  • Werribee Line: Single-track running remains in place between Newport and Laverton stations. This allows trains to continue running during major level crossing removal works but results in a modified timetable. Please check the latest departures before heading to the platform.
  • Cranbourne and Pakenham Lines: Maintenance works will see services start and end at South Yarra from 8:00 PM tonight. Passengers heading toward the city should transfer to Frankston or Sandringham line services at South Yarra.

Commuter Tips

With public transport being free for the duration of the month, heavy patronage is expected on major rail corridors during the morning peak. If you are driving, ensure you clear the Eastern Freeway citybound at Springvale Road before the 10:00 PM ramp closure to avoid a long detour. Safe travels, Melbourne.
