Official Health Advisory: Legionnaires’ Disease Alert

The Victorian Department of Health has issued an active health alert following an outbreak of Legionnaires' disease in Melbourne’s northern suburbs. As of late March 2026, official investigations are focused on the Craigieburn area, including the surrounding suburbs of Mickleham, Greenvale, and Roxburgh Park.

  • Residents and visitors who have spent time in these areas from late February 2026 are urged to monitor for flu-like symptoms.
  • Common symptoms include fever, chills, cough, and shortness of breath, which may progress to severe pneumonia.
  • The Department of Health is currently testing local cooling towers and other potential sources to identify and mitigate the cause of the bacteria.

Metropolitan Road and Traffic Disruptions

Major infrastructure maintenance and essential works are scheduled for Saturday, 21 March 2026, affecting several key routes. Motorists are advised to plan for delays and follow all signposted detours.

  • Southbank (Balston Street): A full northbound road closure is in effect on Balston Street between City Road and Kavanagh Street to facilitate essential line marking. These works will be active on Saturday between 8:00 AM and 3:00 PM.
  • Derrimut (Western Ring Road): Overnight asphalt resurfacing continues on the Western Ring Road northbound. Significant lane closures will occur between Fitzgerald Road and the Western Ring Road interchange from 9:00 PM Saturday through to 5:00 AM Sunday.
  • Eastern Freeway: Ongoing upgrades for the North East Link involve overnight lane and ramp closures between Hoddle Street and Springvale Road. Commuters should be aware of long-term speed reductions that remain in place across this corridor.

Waterway and Park Access Notices

Public access to certain recreational spaces and river paths is restricted due to long-term renewal projects and construction activities.

  • Yarra River (Princes Bridge): The northern arch of Princes Bridge remains under a partial closure for Stage 3 of the bridge renewal program. Watercraft must strictly follow the lit exclusion zone buoys and utilize the central or southern arches for transit.
  • Koonung Creek Trail: Sections of the trail between Tram Road and Springvale Road are experiencing progressive closures. Current dewatering operations and the construction of temporary creek crossings are expected to continue through the end of March.

Public Service and Government Announcements

The Victorian School Building Authority has released the latest list of schools receiving funding under the 2025-26 Planned Maintenance Program. Several Melbourne primary schools are slated for immediate structural repairs, including roof replacements and floor resurfacing. Additionally, the Victoria Government Gazette has resumed its regular publication schedule following recent holiday adjustments, providing updated notices on land auctions and estate requirements.
