Easter Monday Service Adjustments

The City of Melbourne reminds residents that Monday, 6 April 2026, is the Easter Monday public holiday. While most administrative offices and libraries will be closed for the day, essential services will remain operational with the following adjustments:

  • Waste and Recycling: Standard Monday bin collections will proceed as scheduled. Unlike Good Friday, there is no delay for Easter Monday services. Residents are advised to place their bins on the kerbside by 6:00 AM as usual.
  • Parking Enforcement: Public holiday parking rates and time limits apply to all street metered spaces within the city. Check local signage carefully to avoid infringements.

Public Health Advisory: Seasonal Alerts

The Victorian Department of Health has issued several active alerts for the early autumn period. Health officials advise residents and visitors to remain vigilant regarding the following:

  • Legionnaires’ Disease: Monitoring continues for the Craigieburn and surrounding northern suburbs following a recent cluster of cases. Property owners with cooling towers are reminded to maintain rigorous testing and disinfection protocols.
  • Vaccination Rollout: Access to the Japanese Encephalitis vaccine has been expanded for those in high-risk regional areas. Additionally, with the onset of autumn, the 2026 seasonal influenza vaccine program is now active through local GPs and pharmacies.
  • Measles Alert: Authorities have noted an increased risk of measles in the metropolitan area. Residents are encouraged to ensure their immunizations are up to date, particularly before attending large public gatherings.

Transport and Infrastructure Updates

Following the successful integration of the Metro Tunnel earlier this year, commuters are advised of ongoing network refinements starting this month:

  • Bus Timetable Changes: From April 2026, updated bus timetables are in effect to better coordinate with the high-frequency rail services on the Sunbury, Cranbourne, and Pakenham lines.
  • Market Street Works: The partial eastern footpath closure on Market Street, between Flinders Street and Flinders Lane, is scheduled to conclude today, Monday, 6 April. Pedestrian access is expected to be fully restored by the evening.
  • Eastern Freeway: Long-term speed reductions remain in place as part of the North East Link upgrades. Nightly lane closures may occur between Hoddle Street and Springvale Road; motorists should allow extra travel time.

Environmental Notice

As we transition into the cooler months, Parks Victoria and local councils are preparing for autumn fuel reduction burns. Residents may notice smoke across parts of the city fringe depending on wind conditions. Those with respiratory conditions are advised to keep windows closed and limit outdoor activity during periods of visible haze.
