Official Bulletin: Health Alerts and Essential Service Updates

As we move into Sunday, 22 March 2026, the City of Melbourne and the Victorian Department of Health have issued several priority notices regarding public health, infrastructure maintenance, and transport disruptions. Residents and visitors are encouraged to review these official updates to ensure a safe and efficient weekend within the metropolitan area.

Public Health Alert: Legionnaires' Disease Outbreak

The Victorian Department of Health has issued an active health alert (No. 260319) following the notification of six confirmed cases of Legionnaires’ disease as of late March. The Department is currently investigating a localized outbreak centered in the northern suburbs. Key details for the public include:

  • High-Risk Areas: Craigieburn, Mickleham, Greenvale, and Roxburgh Park.
  • Action Required: Any individuals who have spent time in these northern suburbs since late February and develop flu-like symptoms—including fever, chills, cough, and shortness of breath—should seek urgent medical attention.
  • Clinical Context: Healthcare professionals have been advised to maintain a high index of suspicion for atypical pneumonia in patients who have recently visited these areas. Investigations are ongoing to identify the source of the bacteria, including the testing of local cooling towers.

Major Roadworks and Transport Disruptions

Transport Victoria and the City of Melbourne have scheduled essential maintenance and infrastructure installations for Sunday, 22 March. Please plan for the following disruptions:

  • Western Ring Road (Derrimut): Northbound lane closures will be in effect between Fitzgerald Road and the Western Ring Road from 9:00 PM Sunday until 5:00 AM Monday for asphalt resurfacing. Detours are in place via Railway Crescent and Somerton Road.
  • Exhibition Street (CBD): Works for a new gantry installation will commence on Sunday, 22 March. While initial impacts are limited to localized management, motorists should expect changed traffic conditions near the site.
  • CityLink (Flemington): The Racecourse Road off-ramp will be closed for resurfacing from 7:30 PM Sunday. Motorists are advised to detour via Moreland Road or Flemington Road.

Yarra River and Parks Victoria Navigation Notices

Parks Victoria, acting as the waterway manager for the Yarra River, has updated navigation restrictions for Sunday:

  • Princes Bridge Renewal: Stage 3 of the Princes Bridge project remains active. The northern arch of the bridge is partially closed, with reduced clearance for all vessels. All transit must proceed through the central or southern arches.
  • Works Activity: Exclusion zones are in place between Birrarung Marr Landing and Morell Bridge for seawall and wharf construction. Commercial and recreational vessels must maintain a safe distance from work barges and floating equipment.

Precinct Advisory: Melbourne Park Event Activity

Increased pedestrian and vehicle activity is expected in the Melbourne Park precinct on Sunday evening due to major concert events at Rod Laver Arena and Margaret Court Arena. Specifically, performances by Silence Wang and Big Time Rush are scheduled for 7:30 PM. Olympic Boulevard is expected to experience heavy congestion between 6:00 PM and 11:00 PM. Public transport is recommended for those attending the precinct.
