Major Coastal Closures for 2XU Triathlon

Commuters and weekend travelers heading toward the bay should prepare for significant road closures this morning. The final race of the 2XU Triathlon Series is taking place in St Kilda, resulting in the closure of Beach Road and several connecting thoroughfares. From 6:30 am until 11:30 am, closures will be in effect along Beaconsfield Parade, Marine Parade, Jacka Boulevard, and Ormond Esplanade. The impacted stretch runs from St Kilda Street in Elwood all the way to Kerferd Road in Albert Park.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area or use Nepean Highway as a north-south alternative. Managed crossings will be available at Cowderoy Street and Pier Road for access to the Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron and St Kilda Sea Baths, but significant delays are expected throughout the morning. Local parking near the St Kilda Triangle and Catani Gardens will also be heavily restricted.

Widespread Disruptions on the Rail Network

Public transport users face a challenging Sunday with major planned works affecting four metropolitan rail lines. As part of ongoing Level Crossing Removal projects and Big Build upgrades, buses will replace trains on the following routes for the entire day:

  • Hurstbridge Line: Buses replace trains between Parliament and Hurstbridge stations.
  • Mernda Line: Buses replace trains between Parliament and Reservoir.
  • Pakenham and Cranbourne Lines: Buses replace trains between Westall, Pakenham, and Cranbourne stations.

A City Circle replacement shuttle will run in an anti-clockwise direction to connect commuters between CBD stations. Passengers should allow at least an additional 45 to 60 minutes for their journeys, especially when connecting with regional V/Line services.

City Trams and Local Festivals

In the CBD, tram services are expected to experience disruptions due to the National Greek Day Parade. The parade will take place on Birdwood Avenue, impacting traffic and tram flow around the Shrine of Remembrance and the Domain precinct. Additionally, Yarra Trams has flagged general city-bound service changes throughout the day for maintenance.

In the inner west, the Yarraville Festival will see local street closures throughout the village center. While this creates a vibrant atmosphere for pedestrians, drivers should expect congestion on Anderson Street and surrounding corridors. To the south, the Williamstown Italian Festival and the Pets in the Park event in Malvern East will also contribute to localized traffic spikes near Nelson Place and Central Park respectively.

Overnight Roadworks and Freight Routes

For those traveling late into the evening, be aware that asphalt resurfacing works will continue on the Western Ring Road. Northbound lane closures are scheduled near the Fitzgerald Road interchange in Derrimut from 9:00 pm. Detours will be in place via Somerton Road and Mickleham Road. In North Melbourne, Macaulay Road remains partially closed between Boundary Road and Langford Street until 4:00 pm today for bike lane construction and safety sensor installations.
